I think that giving Samus a variety of fire powers could actually be kinda fun. To be honest, Metroid has a serious problem with never getting anything new. Basically, each 2d game just has you recollect the same power ups. Instead of getting her standard power ups, what if you give her different power ups? (okay, some things like the morph ball, high jump/ space jump are essentials) I like the idea of fire element missiles. If Samus has different elemental attacks and resistances (I.E. No Varia suit. Instead, she recieves a Cold resistant suit. The Federation currently has her Varia Suit), that would be pretty awesome! You could even rework some of the old power ups so they work differently! (Grappling beam)
Thats a good idea. A new element is needed, and so fire was definantly one of them for me. I'll have to work out what to do with the suits, Varia or cold like you said could be interesting.
I am also adding different power-ups, such as limited running ones, such as a shield barrier covering Samus for a short amount of time, and others :)
A different grapple beam would be interesting. Perhaps grapple beam could also grab items, and perhaps small enemies, but this is just a brainstorm...
I posted another idea all the way down in the "ideas" post. In hind-sight, that was silly. So, I'm reposting it here and I will post my ideas at the most recent update regardless of the topc in the future.
Another random idea slightly inspired by someone else:
Icy areas with slippery floors. It would make it difficult and/or impossible to do certain things while on ice. However, you could also get a speed boost from running on it to help with certain puzzles. Basically the ice physics would involve reduced acceleration and deceleration for the player in both running and morph ball forms, but would have a higher maximum speed.
A possible item to go with this would be the "Friction Boots". This item would enable Wall-Jumping and while active would also allow you to walk normally on ice. It could be a very early upgrade and there could easily be puzzles that required you to actually TURN IT OFF for certain segments. That would also be a very unique aspect compared to the standard method of just always getting stronger over time. Having to actually turn off something because it's currently detrimental and having to think of that yourself would be a fun puzzle IMO.
I think I see the most potential here for ice physics involving the morph ball. (Which probably would not be effected by Friction Boots, but which could use Spider Ball in a similar fashion for the same end result. Again, more puzzle possibilities.)
Also, Speed Booster could be incompatible with Ice due to Samus slipping when running that fast unless you have Friction Boots.
Freezing water using a freezing power up (Not Ice Beam since it only delivers the cold effect on impact, but possibly Ice Missiles freezing any water that is next to the impact site or some type of ice bombs which could allow you to make frozen walk-ways.) or thawing already frozen water using Fire Bombs could also be great puzzle uses for ice.

Friction boots and an Ice Area sounds cool! But finding the Friction Boots would have to be somewhat hard, at least a little bit difficult :P.
ReplyDeleteMaking frozen walkways also sounds very interesting. And they melt after a couple of seconds, or break if you stand in one spot for too long.
Im liking your ideas, Dragon :) Keep em coming!
